Although not knowing much about trade and diplomacy in eastern Europe, I could be wrong.

If my little knowledge is correct, the byzantine tunic decoration style is based on a tunic with a wrap over decorated strip that winds around the body, both down the front and across at the waist. Later byzantine styles mimic this trim placement with decoration sewn onto the tunic. Then the Austrians copy it.

I think the waist seam is a seperate style, one that maybe was copied from the slavs by the french of chartres and a few others. Mind you the rest of the trim placement on that Izyaslavl tunic is probably inspired by the byzantines too.

I could be attributing too much influence to the byzantines, but they were the superpower of the time (the holy roman empire only came close, but wasn't as powerful or rich). And the trim placement on byzantine dress was to do with rank and power (granted by the emperor), so I'm sure that would create extra incentive for neighbors to make a fashion statement out of wearing it.

Maybe? What think you dear readers?Teffaniahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03522672704171478236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34333824.post-589728451419234712007-10-23T10:32:00.000+10:002007-10-23T10:32:00.000+10:00I see Slavic influences everywhere. You remind me ...I see Slavic influences everywhere. You remind me very strongly, when belted up, of the Izyaslavl' dress (There is a similar dress from Toropsta, which has intact long, narrow sleeves.)

http://www.rustrana.ru/article.php?nid=28252pearlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02162366096516710709noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34333824.post-26348889664283737332007-10-21T15:42:00.000+10:002007-10-21T15:42:00.000+10:00It's a cotton, a jacard I think. I don't know how they got it so shiny, there may be some synthetic in there, or it could just be the very tight weave of the purple thread.

No I don't know where to get more - it's one of those things people pass from stash to stash because it was too good to not buy, but not quite right for today's project. I'm very grateful to Yvonne Yvette for donating it as a tailor's comp prize.Teffaniahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03522672704171478236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34333824.post-86310643617576605722007-10-18T20:57:00.000+10:002007-10-18T20:57:00.000+10:00I thought it looked excellent when I saw you weari...I thought it looked excellent when I saw you wearing it at the Bal d'Argent. I'm fascinated to read the details of style, period and construction. What kind of fabric is it made from?

Having looked at the linked images, I can picture it with decoration. Wow!
~celsaJachttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05064250790526923038noreply@blogger.com
